Final bell for Wall $treet Week
Media Life Magazine: Final kiss for fading 'Wall $treet Week': "Jaws dropped three years ago when Maryland Public Television unceremoniously bumped Louis Rukeyser from his longtime hosting job of "Wall $treet Week," one of public television's biggest draws.
The move seemed to make no sense. MPT claimed it wanted to attract a younger audience to the show. Yet messing with a proven formula in search of a crowd with no strong history of watching personal finance shows seemed misguided.
It turns out it was. The revamped "Week" never recovered from Rukeyser's very public and angry exit. So it came as no surprise when on Friday night the show aired for the last time, signing off for good." Gee. Maybe Maryland Public Television's funding will die a little too. Gag me.
...Oh, it seems MPT's funding already has dipped, by nearly a third. Hmph. Then again, since Rukeyser's CNBC show had to be canceled once he developed a cancerous growth (and couldn't return after back surgery) would W$W have died anyway, without the idiotic changes?
As I read a book on newspaper headline writing and copy editing -- which might actually make me a better writer for TV, try as I might -- I notice the following sentence in Toni Fitzgerald's story:At the same time, MPT’s budget dipped by nearly a third over the past three years, making the continued production of a national show by the local broadcaster impractical. This confused me. I think she means to sayIn addition to the drop in viewership, MPT's budget has also dipped by nearly a third over the past three years, making the continued production of a national show by the local broadcaster impractical.
