What does the word "Fugazi" mean?
Various sources on the Net say fugazi is an acronym, a military slang word from the Vietnam era: "F*ked Up, Got Ambushed, Zipped In." (as in zipped in to a body bag?)
Results: faqs.org, FAQ for the Fugazi Mailing List
Pronunciation: foo-gah-zee
However, one search result alluded to what I'd heard elsewhere, that fugazi, or fugazy is Arabic. But I haven't been able to find anything to confirm this.
Finally, Heathen World confirms:
FUGAZI - Vietnam War slang meaning "f*cked up situation". This is what the band [Fugazi] had in mind. Some say fugazi is an acronym for "F*cked Up, Got in an Ambush and Zipped In", or something similar, but HeaThen friends in the military say that's a load of crap and maybe people are thinking of FUBAR (F[*]ked Up Beyond All Recognition). Fugazi is also Italian slang for fake.
There we are!
Correct use: "That story we got from an anonymous caller proved to be fugazi."Labels: Originally published
