Gotta love the GUBU!
How a new word was created, from GROTESQUE, UNBELIEVABLE, BIZARRE AND UNPRECEDENTED.
And gotta love the acronyms that became words. Is "gubu" an actual dictionary word anywhere?
This article and the ones available from the page above it are quite interesting tales of Dublin and Ireland. There is also a "fake"(?) press release or BBC article featured along with something that doesn't look to me like a fake news item, but then I don't know much about Dublin so maybe it's an in-joke.
I'd love to use GUBU at work, like how the daysiders have brought FUGAZI into vogue. But I'm loath to over-use it, 'cause God knows we would. The only thing off the top of my head that springs into use for it is the killings of the three Woonsocket women, who apparently were dismembered after being raped and murdered (Jeffrey Mailhot is accused of the GUBU crime).
But GUBU sounds too fun (like Star Jones encouraging us to Buy One Get One at Volume, I mean Payless Shoe Source, with the commercials, "Got BOGO on the brain?") to describe desecration or violent massacre. Especially the Woonsocket case because that's no fun at all. Ah, well.
