Old History: "About TopStoryLive.com" [Updated]

For years I've been playing with web sites. It started when I wanted to collect several pages of my favorite links back in middle school, and continued off and on from there.

I got the idea for this site's mission from the word "pressgang." Pressgang.com and .net were taken, probably by fans of the UK TV series on ITV starring Julia Sawalha, who would go on to gain her greatest fame (in the US anyway) on Absolutely Fabulous.

So I started playing around with words like press and text and news. One of my best friends, Kelly Kan, encouraged me towards pressmob.com. That didn't fit quite right.

Finally, on New Year's Day 2003, driving around Providence, Rhode Island, and environs on my way home from work, I remembered a show name I'd been playing around with for a while; a newscast of some sort, an hour, that would be high energy, maybe even satirical or comic, a la The Daily Show without guests, or Eyemissedit News but with some fine tuning. Why not call it Top Story Live?

And so it was decided.

Where the rest of the broadcast news industry web sites are about hiring, firing, who owns who, and other high-energy ratings (and rage) grabbers, I want to focus on the discussion of news theory. What should we be reporting on today and why? Not in the interest of homogenized newscasts, but in the interest of intellectual discussion when we have a free minute at the end of the day before we go home.

Of course in the interest of entertainment, some of this comment (from me at least) will be purposefully as off the cuff as I can manage; specifically for the shock value and to provoke debate. I'm still working out my own voice and values, be they conservative, liberal, independent, or middle of the road.

There is no promise I won't sell out. For all I know I already have.

Enjoy, and we welcome comments.
